By Gregg Hall Even though Costa Rica has a tropical climate, sometimes it is not suitable for bikini contests. Although the rain forest is like the one from 'Tarzan the Jungle Man', it does not mean you should dress like him. The garments worn in Costa Rica today are no different from those of any other Central American country. There are two types of attire: local clothing and traditional clothing that you would wear on special occasions. The men wear simple clothes. Women never wear traditional outfits except for special occasions. Their traditional fashions consist of a dress with ribbons and bright colors. The dresses have no sleeves, but instead have ruffles near the shoulders that rest on the neck when they dance. When they are wearing these dresses, they usually have a traditional flower behind the ear. Even though Costa Rica is usually hot and you might like to wear shorts, they are not well accepted. Locals only wear shorts to the beach, so they might laugh at you if you show up in town showing off your knees and legs. Most people wear long-sleeve shirts and long pants during the day. Men may wear shorts, but they usually do not put them on unless they are going to the beach for a swim. A very important thing that you will need to pack is a good pair of shoes for walking. Tennis shoes or any type of walking shoes will do just fine in Costa Rica. If you plan to go hiking, pack a comfortable pair of boots in your suitcase. If you look closely at the clothing worn by the locals, it is more European than American. Check out what they are wearing, and try to imitate their style. If your wardrobe is unsuitable, you can find all the clothes you need in Costa Rica for a very reasonable price - so go shopping before you decide to wear your shorts.
