Tenerife - A True Value-for-Money Holiday Destination
|
Tantalizing Tenerife is one of the world's leading holiday destinations. Over 10,000,000 holidaymakers land on Tenerife each year, and return repeatedly for what promises to be a great vacation that does not cost a fortune. Here is why. By Terry Cod Tantalizing Tenerife is one of the world's leading holiday destinations. Over 10,000,000 vacationers land on Tenerife each year, and return time and time again for what promises to be a great vacation that does not cost a fortune. Found just off the coast of North Africa, it is one of seven volcanic Canary Islands. Tenerife is the leading island for tourist numbers and income from those tourists. Born from a volcano, Tenerife was created by of a number of eruptions. These eruptions occurred about three and a half million years ago, and there has been no such activity since, although there was a small earthquake measuring four on the Richter scale in the year 2002. Tenerife is split into two very distinctive geographical zones. In the south, the island is considerably dry while in the north, it is very green and fertile with high humidity. Most of the holiday destinations are concentrated to the south of the island in the Costa Adeje region. It is here that the popular and ever growing Playa de Las Americas and Los Cristianos resorts are situated. To the north, the town of Puerto de la Cruz is now becoming a sought-after holiday destination too. Here however, a huge amount of effort has gone into keeping the wonderful ambience of the town, making it a dream location for a relaxing and peaceful break. Before the Spanish invasion in the fifteenth century, the inhabitants of the island were simple native peoples known as the Guanches. 'Tenerife' translates from the Guanches language for 'white mountain'. Down in the richly developed south can be found the lively resort of Los Cristianos. A mile away from its noisy neighbor, Playa de las Americas, the bay of Los Cristianos provides a joyous and fun-filled escape. It is hard to imagine that it was only a few short years ago when Los Cristianos was simply a delightful fishing harbor. Tenerife has transformed beyond recognition since the beginning of the tourism boom some forty years ago. Although a lot has changed, much of the original charm of the town is still in evidence. As you wander through the more ancient parts of town, you will notice that the traditional buildings provide a striking contrast to modern hotel developments. All this cohabits happily with one of the liveliest holiday resorts anywhere in the world. There are two great bathing beaches, Las Vistas and Playa de Los Cristianos, which offer a host of water sports fun as well as refreshment and accessibility. Do not forget the black sand nudist beach of Rincon for that all-over suntan. Playas de Las Americas is where to head for if you fancy a lively holiday, packed with testosterone and white knuckle sports. It is hard to believe that all the white sand was imported from the Sahara Desert, and that this whole resort has evolved to answer the call of a growing package holiday market. In the south, there is no shortage of things to do, which include fun-filled days of performing dolphins together with a host of water games offered by Aqua Land. Why not consider climbing Tenerife's extinct volcano, Mount Teide? Do not worry - the volcano is definitely extinct, and you can reach its summit by using the cable car. Mt. Teide offers a great way to make the most of the island and beyond with panoramic views of El Hierro, La Gomera, and Gran Canaria. The city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife has served as a major port in the Atlantic over the years, and it still serves that role today. Being the capital city as well as the biggest city on the island, life is more cosmopolitan here. The variety of clubs and bars is excellent, with an extensive choice of restaurants offering cuisine from around the world. Santa Cruz de Tenerife is especially exciting throughout the month of February when it plays host to the huge world-famous Tenerife Carnival.
