This article explains why rail travel is a viable alternative for a romantic getaway. Try a train excursion! Travel by rail used to be commonplace. Nowadays most of us do not even think of trains as an option to air or car travel. In fact, some of the greatest views in the world are from the windows of a train passing through areas that are inaccessible to other modes of transportation. Today's rail cars have comfortable seating, and sleeping cars can be quite luxurious. The right train vacation can be like a hotel on wheels, complete with attentive attendants, great meals in the dining car, and complimentary morning newspaper. The purr of the train and tracks in the background can actually be quite soothing. Having said that - be sure to confirm details in advance. European rail and North American rail excursions will have different comfort standards. Some countries can have very cramped (and sometimes uncomfortable) rail cars. A few special items to pack for a train journey include: 1.) Binoculars - so that you can observe wildlife, waterfalls and other visual delights along the route. 2.) Camera. Make sure it has a zoom lens. 3.) Sunglasses. These are important on a sunny day. 4.) Map. Handy if you like to have a relative idea of where you are at any given time. Some maps will show your entire rail route. 5.) Sun block. Be sure to pack appropriate clothing for your destination and any stops you may make along the way. Outside it may be warm, cold, rainy, snowy, or blustery. Check the weather conditions for your route online before you leave. Depending on the area, some kind of insect repellent might also be beneficial. Insect repellent is small - so why not pack a bottle just in case. If you are departing from a city with more than one station, be sure you know in advance exactly which station is the right one. The same applies for your destination if you plan to have a limo or shuttle meet you. When travelling in a foreign country, do not depend on everyone to speak English. Write down important details beforehand so that you can point to names of cities, stations, etc. Draw diagrams with arrows if necessary. Other countries may also understand time expressions differently than you do. For example, someone in Germany who understands a little English might be confused if you say 'quarter past eight'. If he does not hear or understand the 'past', he might confuse this with the German way of saying 7:15 ('quarter eight' - one quarter of the way to eight o'clock). Draw a clock and make sure you indicate the correct time. A train trip can be a wonderful romantic escape! Just make sure to do the proper advance planning.
