Get Down and Dirty with Cave Exploring
Most people compare caving to the commercial tours that are available at many high profile caves throughout the United States. Real spelunking is way more exciting (and a whole lot dirtier). Do you and your romantic partner have a sense of adventure?

If adventure is your thing and you aren't afraid of dark, tight spaces, you could be a candidate for spelunking or cave exploring. Most people compare caving to the commercial tours that are available at many high profile caves throughout the United States. Real spelunking is way more exciting (and a whole lot dirtier).

At its very basic, the sport of spelunking requires a light source (preferably a flashlight) and a large hole in the ground. You crawl in and look around. If you really are serious about trying out this amazing activity, you probably should go a little farther with your preparations.

It's important to dress warmly. Underground temperatures often run in the 50's or 60's year round. Wearing long sleeved shirts and long pants will not only help to keep you warm, but will also protect you as you crawl and wiggle your way through the cave. You should have some heavy boots (like for hiking) and a helmet to protect your head from any potential falling rocks (or an unexpected low ceiling).

The next thing you need is light. Most trained spelunkers do not go into a cave without at least three light sources - one on the helmet, one in their hand, and one tucked away in the clothes in case something happens to the first two light sources. The last thing you want is to be caught deep underground with no light whatsoever.

It is also a good idea to carry a rope with you - attached lifeline-style to the others in your group. This is particularly valuable when you are exploring a new cave. If you slip down a slope or step into a hole, then there is someone there to catch you.

There is one element of spelunking that you have to have no matter how adequately you prepare for the expedition. You have to have a fearless nature to be able to waltz into a hole with tons of dirt perched over your head and not panic. No matter how large the cave opening may be, you will find times that you are cramped and crowded, and that is not the time to find out you are claustrophobic.

If you think you have what it takes, then contact your state's speleological society to find out when they meet and when they are going to be taking a trip. If you don't have a local group, then check with the National Speleological Society based out of Huntsville, Alabama for some tips on how to get started playing in the dirt.
