Fun Activities to Do in the Rocky Mountain West
Although the Rocky Mountain West is famous for its striking beauty, there are several portions of this area that many people do not often tour. If you can, make a point of visiting at least one or more of these attractions on your next trip.

The Mountain west is made up of the states Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado, Nevada, and Utah. Although all of these places are famous for their striking beauty, there are several portions of this area that many people do not often tour, but warrant attention. If you have the time and ability, then make a point of visiting at least one or more of these attractions on your next trip.

1. Visit the Mineral Springs - This geographic area has a large amount of thermal activity, which has resulted in many mineral hot pools. From homey to opulent, there is a pool for every taste. For those who prefer the rustic, White Sulfur Springs Hotel has the best hot spring and motel for you. For those who like more of a spa feel, check out some of the hot springs that Colorado has to offer.

2. Hunt for Petraglyphs - The archaic Indians of the Mountain west were extremely artistic, and a great deal of their 4000-year-old art can still be seen today, painted on flat rock surfaces across the region. For a quick tour, Fremont State Park in Utah has an interesting trail and interpretive center. For those who enjoy walking, Grand Gulch in Utah is a great place in which to spend time.

3. Visit the Lesser Known National Recreation Areas - If you have not visited Bryce Canyon, then you should visit there first, but for those of you who have already done the most popular parks in the region, you could think about visiting the smaller ones. All together, these states have over 53 national sites, and many of the states have outstanding state park systems as well.

4. Check Out the Regional Museums- Many of the best museums are those that are off the beaten track, like the small museum in Three Forks, Montana, in which the local people gathered paraphernalia from their town spanning over 100 years. Of course, some of the bigger museums are worth stopping by as well, such as the Buffalo Bill Museum in Cody, Wyoming. This museum covers many different aspects of the West such as Old Guns of the West or Natural History.

5. Go Skiing - The West is famous for its summers, but we also have some of the best snow around. For those of you who are not interested in trying snowboarding, you might try cross-country. The Sun Valley of Idaho has groomed trails as well as the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest in Montana.

6. Visit an Alpine Lake - The mountains of the western US are full of glacial blue alpine lakes. A great many of them are well known, but a few of the most beautiful are off the primary route of most travelers, and frequently require a rewarding trek to reach. One of our top choices is Island Lake in the Wind Rivers. This secluded alpine lake is enclosed by giant cliffs and jagged mountain peaks that were formed by glacier ice. The Wind River Mountains are known for camping and fishing opportunities. Another spectacular lake in the Wind River Mountains is Lonesome Lake in the Cirque of the Towers area in the southern section of the Wind Rivers.

As you can see, there are a number of things that you can do in the mountain west, beyond the tired car tour. Any of the above itineraries will not only be exciting and fun, but will provide you with many great pictures for a long time to come.
