You've watched those cruise ship commercials on TV where everyone looks like they're having a blast.

Now you're ready to escape the rat race and go on a cruise vacation of your own. Finding a great deal on a cruise ship vacation is one thing, but here are some common cruise ship problems you may encounter.

1. You'll Pay More to Cruise

Supply and demand is the name of the game - and when the cruise ships are easy to fill, there are less deals available for bargain-hunting consumers. To save money, look for off-peak times and just before and after a holiday.

2. Row, Row, Row Your Boat

When you hop onboard a fancy cruise ship, you'd assume that your charming ship would chug along nicely to where it's supposed to go. You'd be wrong - sometimes. On occasion, ships will have engine trouble. That means you're stuck and out of luck.

3. Beware of the Bug

Nasty little viruses like the Norovirus find comfortable breeding opportunities on popular cruise ships. While outbreaks only affect a small percentage of passengers, it is a constant problem. To avoid getting sick on a cruise ship, remember to wash your hands frequently with soap and water.

4. Fly the Expensive Skies

It may be a convenience to let the cruiseline book your airfare, but it's going to cost you a pretty penny in fees. Plus, you might get lousy departure/arrival times, connections, etc. Try arranging your own airfare first, before asking the cruiseline.

5. Caviar and Filet Mignon Are Not Included

If you're looking forward to a 'fine dining' experience equivalent to the best restaurants on land, be prepared to pay $30 or more extra per meal (Make sure your ship has upscale restaurants on board). Everyone else will be eating buffet style.

6. Everything's Included Except All This Fun Stuff

Cruiselines will often tout their 'all inclusive' packages as being a great deal - and they are, but be aware that 'all inclusive' only covers the bare basics. If you want to take part in activities, go to the spa, have pictures taken, drink alcohol, use the internet cafe, etc. you'll have to pay extra for the privilege.

7. Talk to the Hand

Got a complaint? Good luck getting it resolved. The Better Business Bureau of Southeast Florida and the Caribbean reports that Carnival, Royal Caribbean, and Norwegian cruiselines all have an 'unsatisfactory record' when it comes to handling customer complaints. To be fair, at least Norwegian has been somewhat 'responsive' to the BBB feedback. Other lines don't seem to care.
